The Red Rabbit
I’m a “car guy.” I’ve loved cars all my life for two reasons. The first reason is that my dad loves cars. He can tell you the year, make and model of pretty much every car that was made in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. He often says things like, “Look at that Camaro! You know, my mom had one almost exactly like that when I was young.” His dream car is a stock, 1976 Porsche 911 without the “whale tail” spoiler at the back.
The second reason is that I spent hours playing with my extensive Hot Wheels collection. I built stuff out of scrap wood from the garage for my cars. I droving them everywhere, all the while imagining myself behind the wheel in a world full of giant things. I even had a briefcase with individual car slots so that I could bring them with me whenever my parents couldn’t find a babysitter for things like fundraiser banquets.
The first car that my family had after I was born was a little 1981 Volkswagen Rabbit convertible. I liked it a lot. It was hot red, had slippery white leather seats, a funny stick that you had to wiggle around to shift (as I remember it), and 4 circular buttons on the steering wheel for the horn. I liked checking to make sure they that they all worked. It had a great smell, like a combination of warm leather and gasoline.
Eventually, we needed something that could fit all of our gear for our routine summer and Christmas road trips out west to visit family. We got a baby blue, 1990 Toyota Camry. For a while, we kept the Rabbit after we got the Camry. We figured out that you can fit two cars in a one-car garage if you’re careful. When the time came, we gave it to my cousin in British Columbia who drove it until it died. I sometimes wonder where it is now. Maybe someone resurrected it for a cool project like this green one! That would be awesome.
